IREX Technologies Inc. announced that its upcoming electronic reader features an nice application for direct access to Barnes & Noble Inc.’s e-bookstore. Earlier this month IREX Technologies confirmed that its anticipated device will include an 8.1-inch touch screen with stylus navigation and 3G wireless connectivity. IREX, which already offers several different electronic readers, plans to start selling a new model sometime in 2009 that will include wireless connectivity for downloading books and other content straight to the device — much like Amazon.com Inc.’s Kindle e-book reader. IREX’s new device also will sport an 8.1-inch touch screen.

Barnes & Noble launched its new e-bookstore in July, selling books consumers can read on the iPhone, iPod Touch, BlackBerry and most personal computers. It also will be the exclusive provider of books for a reader from Mountain View, Calif.-based Plastic Logic, which expects to release its device in 2010.

E-books still make up just a fraction of overall book sales, but the sales reported to the Association of American Publishers have grown sharply since the start of 2008, which is just after the Kindle was released. From April to June, U.S. trade e-book sales more than tripled from the year-ago period, as reported by about a dozen publishers.

The RIM Blackberry Curve 8300 is the first in the Blackberry Curve line of phone, a version above the Blackberry Pearl 8100. The Blackberry Curve uses the same operating system (OS) as the Pearl. It is very easy to use the keys on the full QWERTY keyboard due to the keys being spaced so far apart. It has a 2 Megapixel (MP) Digital camera. It has an MP3 player. Although the later versions of the Blackberry Curve do have video recording, the 8300 does not. You can download a more updated operating system which will allow you to have a video camera. AT&T’s 3G network is unavailable for the Curve 8300, but the EDGE network does have it perks when it comes to internet due it’s high speed. All in all the Blackberry Curve 8300 is the best phone from AT&T I have used.

The sales figures are in for Q1 2009 and sitting at the top of the heap for US smartphone sales is the BlackBerry Curve 83xx-series. This includes the basic 8300, the GPS-touting 8310, the Wi-Fi equipped 8320, and the CDMA-friendly 8330. These all have fundamentally the same outward appearance, but they have slightly different specs inside.

You would think that if a Research in Motion handset were to oust the iPhone from the top spot that it would be one of the newer smartphones. However, at this time, the BlackBerry Bold is only being sold by AT&T and the Curve 8900 is only being sold by T-Mobile. By contrast, nearly every carrier has a Curve 83xx series in its lineup. That probably helps quite a bit.

Sliding to second place was the iPhone. Apple (and Palm) saw its smartphone share drop by 10 percent during Q1, whereas RIM’s share increased by nearly 50 percent. The BlackBerry Storm swept through into the third slot.
